Megan and Ed chose the most magical place for their spring engagement photos, the Boerner Botanical Gardens. We strolled around the gardens stopping frequently to make use of the the beautiful blooms and perfectly designed grounds. For all of you interested in having film photography used in your session or wedding every image in this post was shot on film – it’s my favorite photography medium.

Morgan and Sean chose Kohler-Andrea state park (of my all time favorite locations) for their impossibly romantic engagement session. These two are so in love have the best chemistry in front of the camera. The day of the shoot was overcast and windy, but the mood that mother nature created made the shoot even more beautiful. Don’t be afraid of an “un-perfect” weather day, I think these photos may sway you to see the beauty in the soft color tones of textured cloudy skies and the drama of a little wind.  Â

I just loved photographing Michael and Laura for their Walker’s Point engagement session. Laura told me they wanted a urban setting for their session, and let me choose wherever I thought would be best. Yes! I love that kind of trust. I knew I wanted to go on a walking tour of the northern section of Walker’s Point in Milwaukee. Michael goes to school out of state so we had only a few dates to make this work, and thank goodness the weather happily cooperated! We chased the sun west of where we started our session as we chatted about their wedding plans and the best places to eat. I can’t wait for their spring wedding at Lake Park…if it’s half as fun as this session then it’s going to be a great time!

Erin and Aaron are planning their wedding from across the country, and wanted their engagement session to be in one of their favorite Wisconsin forests. They chose to have their Kettle Moraine engagement session early in the morning to capitalize on the soft light and so that they could spend their time in the midwest with their families – as they only had a few days to organize many of their wedding plans while in town! Both Erin and Aaron are avid distance runners and it’s no coincidence that we chose this gorgeous trail to highlight their affection for the outdoors. Take a look and see the beauty these two brought to the trail!

Sometimes the things we want just don’t work out. Thomas and Emily really wanted a snowy winter engagement shoot…but mother nature had other ideas and our initial lakefront winter engagement session was scraped. After 8 weeks of snow dances we decided to call it and go with a grey monotone theme instead. I’ve always loved the large rocks at the edge of where Lake Michigan meets Milwaukee, and we decided to tempt the wintry waves with our presence. To really play up the grey apparel and starkness of late February I chose to shoot mostly with a high speed black and white film for effect. Of course I had to bring out some color film to play up the bold coral lip Emily had on with the rosy/orange tones of the granite and the blue sky contrasting perfectly. Thomas and Emily made the best of their less than ideal engagement session, and quite frankly I love thinking outside of the box and creating one of a kind imagery for my one of a kind couples.

Cassie and Chris suggested having their engagement session in their very own backyard in Mequon, Wisconsin, and of course I was beyond excited. Seeing my couples comfortable in their element makes for a breezy session, and as a bonus Audi got to play a large role in her mom’s (and new dad’s) engagement session. I must admit I love having pets make a cameo in engagement and wedding photos, they are a part of the family after all. Cassie incorporated their upcoming wedding colors into their shoot – pink and teal for the win! That personalized pop of color really added a little something special to the neutral winter background. Scroll on to see the cuteness below!

I met Cynthia and Ben at Pleasant Valley Park, in Cedarburg, for their engagement session. These two are going to have a destination wedding, but wanted an engagement session in their home state, so we planned on carefree natural setting. The sky was overcast and threatened rain, but we pushed on with the photo shoot. As we wandered further into the park it became apparent that mother nature wasn’t going to let us off the hook, but we continued since I had a fresh roll of black and white film that I had to finish! The sky had turned black at this point, and we were just hoping to stay dry just long enough, when I discovered the little trail…and those super moody images are my favorite shots. Sometimes it’s the lack of light that gives us the biggest opportunities to create.

Personalizing your engagement shoot to who you are as a couple is always in style, and this couple did a stellar job making it their own. This is truly a swoon worthy photo session. The day of our shoot, Lake Michigan was socked in by fog at Kohler-Andrea State Park on this cool August day last summer. Monica and Alec came prepared for their shoot by bringing a vintage motorcycle and some bubbly to celebrate their engagement. I had a blast documenting their love story while they frolicked on the beach without a care in the world. Can’t wait for their wedding this weekend!!!

My favorite kind of engagement sessions are the ones where I get an immediate sense of who the couple are, and these two are a GREAT team. About a week before our shoot Jessica emailed me letting me know that she had recently had knee surgery and might be wearing her big ‘ole therapy boot; however, on the day of their session, Jessica was sans boot. Being a gentleman (and an upstanding fiance), William helped her maneuver around the Third Ward without the non-photogenic accessory. It was light and laughter the entire time I spent with them. These two were so much fun to have in front of my camera – that I’m already looking forward to their June wedding!

Cold and overcast don’t have to be dirty words on the day of your engagement photo session. Just take this engagement session, for example – Kailin and Jason had all the warmth they needed, and the beautiful colors from Frame Park’s garden kept the session from looking dull. These two are chock full of laughter and love, so let the countdown to their wedding day begin!
